The Top 5 Red Sonja Moments of 2010

Issue: Red Sonja #50
Red Sonja returns

Nine months after the last issue appeared on the newsstands the regular Red Sonja series returns with a giant 50th issue. Clocking in at 100 pages and featuring four covers the book included both new and classic stories. It was a welcomed return but too bad it took publisher Dynamite Entertainment three months to release issue #51.

Issue: Red Sonja #8
Sonja's tableside manners

At a banquet in Sonja’s honor, the wine is served among the guests. To everyone’s surprise Sonja declines the wine and chooses a flagon of ale instead. As a lord goes on about the intricacy of the wine to the people around the table, Sonja chugs down her ale and belts out a loud belch. She may be a queen running a kingdom but her etiquette still needs to be worked on.

Issue: Red Sonja #50
Red Sonja defeats the Frost Giant

Wanting to break the wintry spell that has her stuck at a viking port, Sonja volunteers to slay the Frost Giant. A tour guide leads her to the mountain where the giant dwells and then cowardly rides off. She defeats the giant and he begs her to take his life. He goes on to tell how as a young man he had also killed a giant, and in doing so had cursed himself to take his place. Sonja refuses to end his life but the giant forces her hand to kill him. With him dead Sonja looks doomed to be the new giant of the mountain. A ray of hope arrives when her tour guide returns. Sonja convinces him of the untold riches that lie inside the giant’s cave. After the tour guide runs inside, she causes an avalanche to trap him within. Having found someone to take the curse, Sonja proceeds to steal her replacement’s horse and leave the mountain.

Issue: Queen Sonja #8
Sonja loses in combat (as well as her top)

After his men are defeated by Queen Sonja’s army, Lord Ariok and his sister Alethia escape to the forests of the eastern mountains. There they are ambushed by Sonja’s men. Though Ariok proves to be a capable fighter, he and Alethia are surrounded. Sonja arrives just in time to stop any further bloodshed. Concerned for Alethia’s safety and respecting his lineage to the first kings of Sogaria she offers a challenge to duel her to the death. Sonja may have bitten off more than she can chew because Ariok’s skills with a blade is equal to her own. Both tired and wounded the battle seems to have no end in sight, but the tide turns when a strike from Ariok breaks the link that holds Sonja’s chainmail top together. Trying to keep her modesty Sonja slips in a riverbed, losing her sword and half of her top. Ariok prepares to finish her off. As she lies defenseless on her back, Sonja can only look on with surprise and humility at the man who finally bested her in combat.

Issue: Queen Sonja #9
Queen Sonja takes Ariok as her fiancé

To say Queen Sonja and Lork Ariok’s relationship got on the wrong foot would be an understatement. Failing to lead a rebellion to take the crown from her, Ariok is cornered by Sonja’s army. In their short time conversing it is obvious Sonja and Ariok share not only respect for each other but a mutual attraction as well. But a courtship is the furthest thing on their minds. They are on opposing sides and one of them has to die. Sonja fights Ariok and he goes on to defeat her, but can’t bring himself to deliver the killing blow. His hesistation leads him to be taken prisoner.

Sonja’s prophecy to not lie with a man unless she is bested in combat has been fulfilled. She can now let Ariok into her bed but their situation is a tricky one. He is the queen’s captive and leader of the resistance to take her kingdom. Despite her captains’ distrust in him, Sonja begins a friendship with Ariok. They share much of their personal lives with each other. Sonja even shows a softer side, breaking down when she tells of the day she was attacked and her family slaughtered. Their relationship turns romantic and Sonja knows it can’t carry on with Ariok as her prisoner. At a special session of court Sonja announces she has chosen Ariok to be her husband. He accepts her proposal amid the court’s disapproval. It looks like Sonja has found the happiness and love that has eluded her, but betrayal and a dark secret may undo it all.
